Is Therapy Confidential? What to Expect Before Your First Session

If you've never been to therapy before, one of the first questions on your mind is probably this: who finds out what I say in there? It's a fair question, and an important one to feel settled about before your first session.

The short answer

Yes. What you share in session stays in session. Confidentiality is a foundational ethical obligation of the counselling profession, not an optional courtesy. Nothing is shared with your employer, family, or anyone else without your explicit consent.

What that looks like in practice

  • No one is told you're attending therapy unless you choose to share that yourself.
  • Session content isn't discussed with people in your life, even if they ask directly.
  • Notes are kept securely and are not accessible outside the therapeutic relationship.

The exceptions, and why they exist

Confidentiality has a small number of legal and ethical limits: a serious, imminent risk of harm to yourself or someone else; ongoing abuse of a child or vulnerable person; or a court formally compelling disclosure. These exist to protect life and safety, and in the vast majority of therapy relationships, they never come into play.

If you're still unsure

It's completely reasonable to ask about confidentiality directly before booking, or in your first session. A good therapist won't be offended by the question.

If you have questions about what therapy with me looks like, feel free to — there's no pressure, just a starting conversation.
