How Do You Spot Burnout on Your Team Before It Costs You?

By the time an employee hands in their resignation, burnout has usually been building for months. Managers are often the first people positioned to notice — if they know what to look for.

It rarely looks like "I'm burned out"

Most people don't name it directly, even to themselves. It shows up sideways: quality slipping on someone who used to be reliable, a normally engaged person going quiet in meetings, or someone taking noticeably longer to do the same work they used to handle easily.

What to watch for across a team

  • A sharp drop in participation from someone who used to contribute readily
  • Increased irritability or conflict that's out of character
  • More sick days, or people working through illness rather than resting
  • Missed deadlines from someone with a previously strong track record
  • Cynicism or detachment — "why bother" comments about work that used to matter to them

Why "just tell them to rest" doesn't work

Burnout is rarely just an individual problem to fix with a vacation. It's often a signal about workload, unclear expectations, or a team culture that doesn't leave room to say "I'm struggling." Sending someone off to rest without addressing what's underneath usually means they come back to the same conditions.

What actually helps at the organizational level

The most effective interventions happen before a crisis: manager training to recognize early signs, clear channels for raising workload concerns without penalty, and building in genuine recovery time rather than treating burnout as a personal failing. A structured wellbeing check-in or workshop can surface issues while they're still manageable.

If you're noticing these signs on your team and want to talk through what support could look like, feel free to to discuss corporate consulting options.
